First-Class Machu Picchu Peru – Galapagos Pre or Post Extension
2016 & 2017

Overview:

Machu Picchu is one of the world’s greatest wonders. This 7-day/6-night first class adventure takes you to the Incan empire’s historic capital of Cusco, an Andean jewel and UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. From Cusco, the cathedral and La Compañia, the convent of Santo Domingo and the fortress of Sacasayhuaman are only an hour away from the winding Urubamba Valley, known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Hidden high in the Andes and lost to the world for centuries, Machu Picchu was rediscovered in 1911 by retired US Senator Hiram Bingham. A journey to this lofty citadel is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Abandoned by the Incas, fabled Machu Picchu is located high above the clouds in a spectacular setting overlooking the deep canyon of the Urubamba River. The citadel served as a place of worship and stargazing, as well as a private hacienda for Incan royalty.

The following itinerary can easily be added as a prelude or postlude to a Galapagos cruise, bearing in mind the best time to visit Cusco and Machu Picchu is April through October. Don’t wait to book your trip during these months as hotels fill up quickly!

Day-by-day Itinerary:

DAY 1 – ARRIVE LIMA, PERU

Fly to Lima (LIM), the capital and largest city of Peru. Upon arrival at Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Lima’s Miraflores district. Overnight at the Casa Andina Private Collection Miraflores.

DAY 2 – LIMA / CUSCO

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight from Lima (LIM) to Cuzco (CUZ) departing in the morning. Upon arrival to Cusco, transfer to the Casa Andina Private Collection Hotel. The rest of the morning is to acclimate to the altitude. In the afternoon, you will tour this capital of the Incan Empire, including visits to the “Plaza de Armas” (main square), the Cathedral and the Santo Domingo Monastery (Koricancha). Also visit the surrounding ruins of Kenko, Puka Pukara, Tampu Machay and the fortress and religious site of Sacsayhuaman. Overnight at the Casa Andina Private Collection Cuzco.

DAY 3 – CUZCO / MACHU PICCHU

After a buffet breakfast, transfer to the Cuzco station for a 3 ½ hour scenic train trip on the Vistadome train with panoramic windows through the Urubamba Valley, followed by a 30-minute bus ride up to the breathtaking Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu followed by a guided tour through the ruins. Lunch is included at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. Your afternoon is free to explore the ruins on your own and return to the hotel at your leisure. Alternatively, you may prefer to allow time to explore the paths from the hotel, take a guided tour: nature walk, orchid path or twilight walk. There is also a spectacled bear rescue and conservation project on site. Or just relax and schedule a spa treatment or sauna (outdoors, tented and powered by fire). Dinner and overnight at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

DAY 4 – MACHU PICCHU / URUBAMBA (SACRED VALLEY)

After your buffet breakfast, you are free to return to Machu Picchu (on your own, no guide or bus tickets provided) or you may choose to go on foot but you must leave early (6am). The overnight stay before allows you to fully explore the altars, temples, fountains, staircases and terraced gardens early this morning – before the crowds arrive. If you are adventuresome, you may want to walk to Inti Punku or the “Gate of the Sun” a mountain pass on a hill behind the site through which the Inca Trail passes on its approach to Machu Picchu. Or you may wish to climb Huayna Picchu, the peak that rises dramatically above the ancient citadel. Return to the hotel for 3:30pm departure by train to Ollantaytambo station. Upon arrival, transfer to Casa Andina Private Collection Sacred Valley for overnight.

DAY 5 – URUBAMBA / CUSCO

After breakfast, depart early for the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the Urubamba Valley. Tour the town and fortresses of Ollantaytambo and drive up and hike the splendid Inca ruins of Pisac, a large complex of religious temples, agricultural terraces and Astronomic observatories. A lunch buffet and ceviche bar is provided at Tunupa. After lunch, visit Pisac, a picturesque town of creole and colonial aspect that comes alive on market day. People from surrounding communities converge on the tiny central plaza to buy and sell produce, alpaca sweaters, and beautiful llama rugs of all sizes, blankets, cotton fabric, musical instruments, and food. Return to the Casa Andina Private Collection Cusco and overnight.

DAY 6 – CUSCO / LIMA

This morning’s breakfast is followed by a transfer to the airport for your fight from Cusco (CUZ) to Lima (LIM) departing mid-morning. Upon arrival, transfer to the Casa Andina Private Collection in Miraflores. Your afternoon city tour of Lima includes the Cathedral, “Plaza Mayor” (main square), Government, Archbishop, and Torre Tagle Palaces. Afterwards, drive through Lima’s modern residential areas: San Isidro with its olive grove, golf course, and “Huaca Huallamarca”; and Miraflores with its Central Park, “Parque del Amor”, and ocean views. The private museum of Miguel Mujica Gallo includes a splendid display of gold objects and ornaments which illustrate the craftsmanship of the ancient Peruvian cultures of Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Lambayeque, Mochica, and Chimu. This museum also houses an eclectic arms collection which includes old Peruvian weapons and ancient, bizarre firearms. Overnight back at the Casa Andina Private Collection Miraflores.

DAY 7 – DEPART LIMA

Check out of the hotel after breakfast and then a private transfer takes you back to the Lima airport (LIM). Check in for your flight out of Peru.
