Brief Itinerary:

Day 01: Arrive to Colombo, Sri Lanka. Check in for 2 nights to Gateway Airport Garden Hotel.
Day 02: Walking locally to enjoy bird life, butterflies and dragonflies. 2nd overnight at Gateway Airport Garden Hotel.
Day 03: Transfer to Galle. Walking Tour. Transfer to Weligama. Check in for 1 night at Marriott Weligama.
Day 04: Whale Watching & other marine life viewing. Transfer to Sinharaja. Check in to Rainforest Edge Resort for 2 nights.
Day 05: Full day exploring Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve. 2nd overnight at Rainforest Edge Resort.
Day 06: Transfer to Udawalawe National Park. PM Jeep safari. Transfer to Yala. Check in to Flameback Eco Lodge for 3 nights.
Day 07: AM safari in Yala National Park. PM Tissa Wetlands. 2nd overnight at Flameback Eco Lodge.
Day 08: AM safari in Lunugamvehera National Park. PM safari in Yala National Park. 3rd overnight at Flameback Eco Lodge.
Day 09: AM safari in Bundala National Park. Transfer to Nuwara Eliya. Check in to St. Andrew’s Hotel for 2 nights.
Day 10: AM exploration of Horton Plains. Visit to Hakgala Botanical Garden. 2nd overnight at St. Andrews Hotel.
Day 11: Visit Victoria Park. Travel to Kandy via a tea plantation. Walk in Peradeniya Botanic Gardens.Tree of Life Hotel for 2 nights.
Day 12: AM Nature walk. Visit Temple of the Tooth WHS. PM attend a classical Kandian dance performance.2nd night Tree of Life Hotel.
Day 13: AM transfer to Dambulla via a local batik factory & Ranweli Spice Garden. Check in to Heritance Kandalama Hotel for 3 nights.
Day 14: Drive to Polonnaruwa with visits in the ancient capital. 2nd overnight at Heritance Kandalama Hotel.
Day 15: AM visit to Lion Rock. PM safari. 3rd overnight at Heritance Kandalama Hotel.
Day 16: AM birding excursion & cave complex visit. Final group dinner. Transfer to international airport and depart for home.

Day-by-day Itinerary:

DAY 01: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 01, 2022, COLOMBO, SRI LANKA

Arrive this evening to Colombo, Sri Lanka. Clear Customs & Immigration and transfer to the Hotel. On arrival, check in to Gateway Airport Garden Hotel for 2 nights.

DAY 02: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 02, 2022, NEGOMBO

As many flights arrive during the middle of the night, meet your fellow travelers and group leaders (Mark & Mayumi
Brazil) and your local guide in the mid-morning for a briefing followed by lunch together. Afterwards, once the
temperature begins to fall, join your leaders in exploring the hotel grounds for birds, butterflies and dragonflies.
Welcome cocktails and Dinner and overnight at Gateway Airport Garden Hotel.

DAY 03: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 03, 2022, GALLE | WELIGAMA

After breakfast, depart overland for historic Galle. Take a walking tour of Galle’s historic district, one of the best preserved examples of a European-built fortified city in South Asia, including Galle Fort, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, built by the Dutch in the 16th century. Enjoy lunch before continuing on to Weligama. On arrival,
check in for 1 night to Marriott Weligama.

DAY 04: SUNDAY, DECEMBER 04, 2022, WELIGAMA | SINHARAJA

After breakfast, enjoy a morning boat trip in search of Blue Whales and other marine wildlife, including dolphins
and seabirds. After lunch, a scenic drive brings you to the Sinharaja Biosphere Reserve — Sri Lanka’s single most
important conservation area as it is the country’s last viable primary tropical rainforest. More than 60% of the
plants in the forest are found nowhere else on earth, along with all but one of Sri Lanka’s endemic bird species.
Dinner and overnight at Rainforest Edge Resort.

DAY 05: MONDAY, DECEMBER 05, 2022, SINHARAJA RAINFOREST RESERVE

Enjoy a full day exploring Sinharaja with a picnic lunch at Martin’s Lodge. 2nd overnight at Rainforest Edge Resort.

DAY 06: TUESDAY, DECEMBER 06, 2022, UDAWALAWE NATIONAL PARK | YALA NATIONAL PARK

Today, head east, descending into the lowlands of Sri Lanka. After lunch, enjoy a jeep safari in Udawalawe National
Park. to look for wild Asian Elephants and a host of birds and other animals. Afterwards, continue to Yala and check
in to the Flameback Eco Lodge for three nights.

DAY 07: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 07, 2022, YALA NATIONAL PARK

Our morning safari takes us through part of 100,000 ha Yala National Park, with its open thorn scrub and coastal
wetlands. We will watch for Asian elephants, leopards, wild water buffalo, spotted deer and a wide range of birds.
After lunch we visit the renowned Tissa wetlands to watch the colorful birds of the area including egrets, storks,
herons and kingfishers, followed by enjoying sundowners as we watch an enormous fruit bat colony waking while
the birds return to their roost. 2nd overnight at Flameback Eco Lodge.

DAY 08: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 08, 2022, LUNUGAMVEHERA | YALA NATIONAL PARK

This morning’s safari takes us into Lunugamvehera National Park (adjacent to Yala) where we continue our
search for leopards, elephants and water birds. In the afternoon enjoy a final safari in Yala National Park. Third
and final overnight at Flameback Eco Lodge.

DAY 09: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 09, 2022, BUNDALA NATIONAL PARK | NUWARA ELIYA

Depart after breakfast. Our first visit of the day is to the nearby Bundala National Park with its dry forest and maze of
waterways, lagoons and dunes where we watch for storks and fish eagles as well as migrant shorebirds and thousands
of other colorful birds. After lunch venture into Sri Lanka’s Hill Country of Nuwara Eliya to visit the hill station known
as Little England. Check in for two nights to St. Andrew’s Hotel.

DAY 10: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2022, HORTON PLAINS

An early start this morning allows us to visit the mossy forests and grassy highland plateau of Horton Plains while
it is cool and the wildlife active. As we admire the local rhododendrons and other shrubs we will search for carious
endemic species including purple-faced leaf monkey, Sri Lanka white-eye and yellow-eared bulbul. After lunch in
Nuwara Eliya we spend the afternoon exploring the impressive Hakgala Botanical Garden. 2nd overnight at St.
Andrew’s Hotel.

DAY 11: SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2022, VICTORIA PARK | KANDY

Birdwatchers will enjoy an early morning visit to Victoria Park, which offers not only an extensive array of flowering
plants but also exciting wintering birds that may include Pied Thrush. After breakfast we depart for Kandy taking
time to visit a tea plantation along the way to learn about the production of Ceylon tea. After lunch in Kandy we
explore the enormous and delightful Perideniya Royal Botanic Gardens. Check in to the Tree of Life Hotel for 2
nights.

DAY 12: MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2022, KANDY

A relaxing morning will be spent with a nature walk around the hotel grounds. After lunch, visit the Temple of the
Tooth followed by ‘afternoon tea’ then a performance of the classical Kandian dance. 2nd overnight at Tree of Life
Hotel.

DAY 13: TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2022, DAMBULLA

After breakfast, we journey northwards to Dambulla, stopping along the way at a local Batik workshop and at the
Ranweli Spice Garden. Arriving in Dambulla, we check in to the Heritance Kandalama Hotel for 3 nights.

DAY 14: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2022, DAMBULLA

This morning, after breakfast, visit the former capital and Buddhist kingdom of Polonnaruwa. We will make
several stops while touring this magnificent ancient capital. 2nd overnight at Heritance Kandalama Hotel.

DAY 15: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2022, SIGIRIYA

After breakfast, we will visit Sri Lanka’s most dramatic site — Sigiriya. This spectacular World Heritage Site is
also known as ‘Lion Rock’. In the late afternoon we will explore the local area in search of wildlife. Dinner and 3rd
overnight at Heritance Kandalama Hotel.

DAY 16: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2022, DAMBULLA |COLOMBO | DEPARTURE

After a final early morning walk in search of birds, set out after breakfast to visit the extraordinary cave-temple
complex at Dambulla. Continue to the Gateway Airport Garden Hotel for a final group dinner before transferring to
the airport for flights home.

Dr. Mark Brazil
Author, Naturalist & Expedition Leader

Mark trained as a biologist then pursued careers in conservation, education, and television. He is the author of numerous articles, papers and more than ten books, most notably Japan: The Natural History of an Asian Archipelago (2022), Wild Hokkaidō (2021), A Field Guide to the Birds of Japan (2018) and The Nature of Japan (2018). Mark is the founder of Japan Nature Guides www.japannatureguides.com A keen naturalist, hiker and cross-country skier, Mark loves nothing more than being outdoors watching wildlife and learning about his adopted homeland.

Mayumi Brazil, Culturalist

Mayumi was born and grew up in Hokkaidō, Japan’s northern island. She studied Japanese Literature at college, but is also interested in film and contemporary culture. Mayumi is a licensed national tour guide. She is fond of her country’s culture, including its cuisine, and enjoys exploring, explaining and sharing it with visitors. Her hobbies include: mountain hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and wildlife watching. Mayumi travels frequently with Mark, co-leading tours from South America to South Asia.
