Brazil’s Pantanal & Amazon: A Wildlife Safari
September 27 – October 07, 2021

Day-by-day Itinerary:

Day 1 – Depart USA

Board your independent flight to Brazil.

Day 2 – Brasilía, Brazil / Cuiabá

Arrive in Brasilia and connect with your domestic flight to Cuiabá. Transfer to the Hotel Deville Prime Cuiabafor a welcome dinner and overnight.

Day 3 – Cuiaba / Porto Jofre

After breakfast, depart overland for Porto Jofre along the Transpantaneira Highway. There is ample time to make stops for birds, nature viewing, and photography along the way. Described as the world’s largest wetland area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a Biosphere Reserve, your visit is timed during the dry season when water starts to recede and wildlife congregates at available sources. The Hotel Porto Jofre, your base for two nights, is situated quite literally at the end of the road, on the banks of the Cuiabá River.

Day 4 – Porto Jofre

Spend the day exploring along the banks of the Cuiabá River by boat and on land. This area is one of the best places in the world to observe the elusive jaguar, and sighting these massive carnivores is our primary goal. Some of the many birds easily seen here include jabiru storks, anhingas, capped herons, southern screamers, snail kites, silver-beaked tanagers, toco toucans, and the endemic nanday or black-hooded parakeet. Other wildlife you may encounter include giant river otter, caiman, tapir, anaconda, howler monkey, and capybara.

Day 5 – 6 – Porto Jofre / Araras (Northern Pantanal)

After breakfast, depart overland heading north, making stops along the way for more wildlife viewing and photography. Arrive at Araras Eco Lodge in the afternoon, your comfortable base for two days of exploration. Activities here include climbing the lodge’s canopy tower, watching the crowded bird feeders, and embarking on nature walks and drives to look for a wealth of birds and wildlife, including the world’s largest member of the parrot family, the rare and beautiful hyacinth macaw. Spotlighting excursions may reveal great potoos, crab-eating foxes, and with luck, a tapir or an ocelot.

Day 7 – Araras / Cuiaba / Amazon (Alta Floresta)

Return to Cuiaba for our flight to Alta Floresta, perched on the edge of immense old-growth rainforests that make up Brazil’s southern Amazon. Incredible numbers of birds, mammals, butterflies and more make this one of the most biodiverse and rewarding places in the world to visit. Journey by road and water to your home for three nights, Cristalino Lodge. Set on a private reserve of 44 square miles, Cristalino was voted one of the World’s Best Ecolodges by readers of National Geographic Traveler and is renowned for its conservation work as well as quality of experience.

Day 8 – 9 Amazon

During two full days of exploration, venture out into the forest and experience all this unique ecosystem has to offer. Because this region lies between 950 and 1,400 feet above sea level, the rivers do not generally flood the forests. For this reason, the predominant vegetation is evergreen forest (terra firma) with tall and well-formed trees. In addition to evergreen forest, five other distinct vegetation types are found on the lodge’s private reserve. Combine that with the proximity of the Pantanal and the Cerrado and you wind up with high levels of species diversity and population density, offering visitors to this special place a unique opportunity to view species that inhabit three different regions. A large number of endemic species, such as the white-cheeked spider monkey, red-nosed saki, cryptic forest falcon, crimson-bellied conure, and black-girdled barbet can be found only in this area. Explore the many trails and waterways Cristalino has to offer, climbing to canopy towers for bird’s eye views and visiting a site naturally rich in minerals. This area is favored by large forest mammals such as the South American tapir, collared peccary, white-lipped peccary, giant anteater, and the southern tamandua.

Day 10 – Amazon / Brasilia

After a morning hiking in the forest, fly to Brasilia. Check in to the Ibis Brasilia Aeroportofor dinner and overnight.

Day 11 – Brasilia / USA

Board your independent homeward flight, arriving in the USA the same day .
